Relaying errors from the server indicate your trying to send mail without a password. That is your server requires authentication and you are not supplying it.

Thunderbird stores passwords in a password manager, not as plain text in the registry as some other mail client do. So when you set up your account you enter your user name. When you send mail your asked for the password that goes with that outgoing server and select for it to be stored in the password manager if you want Thunderbird to remember your password.
If your trying to send mail from say MeanPerson@gmail.com using the nifty server then it is going to tell you that you can not do that. You should be using Google SMTP server not the nifty one and expecting it to relay for the other account. I would assume the nifty server will only accept outgoing mail for @Nifty.com mail addresses.
